The anti-stress remedy

Similar to calcium, magnesium builds up bones and teeth. In stressful situations magnesium influences the release of adrenaline, a hormone which activates metabolism during critical, tense situations and which helps improve one’s reactivity enormously. Magnesium also takes part in the transmission of information from the nerves to the muscles. Deficiency symptoms are widespread nowadays and there are numerous reasons for that, such as one-sided nutrition, for example.

A person who consumes large quantities of caffeine, tea and cola drinks frequently lacks  magnesium because the body loses a lot of magnesium through the urine. Also, during situations of stress more magnesium gets lost. Medications also consume a lot of magnesium. Symptoms of a lack of magnesium are muscle cramps, especially in the calves.

Through its anticonvulsant effect, magnesium can relieve headaches and migranes; furthermore this mineral nutrient prevents cramps in the coronary vessels as well as arrhythmias. Agitated, anxious and depressed people may also lack magnesium.

Green vegetables, such as leaf spinach and spinach beet contain lots of magnesium. Besides fruit juices enriched with magnesium, wholemeal products, nuts, legumes and especially soy beans are also very adequate.
